Catherine Sherer Bishop (vocals, percussion, dance steps) comes to St. Brigid's with mostly a dancing background: she is a certified Irish dance instructor who has toured and taught in the U.S. and internationally. She has, however, previously dabbled in singing as a vocalist with Texas-based band Idle Road, and with the occasional pub performance both whilst living in Ireland and since her return in 2004. In addition to vocals, her dance steps and drumming add another layer to the St. Brigid's sound.
Margaret Cupples (vocals, dance steps) is always on the hunt for perfect versions of lyrics for the group's traditional repertoire; she enjoys the stories behind the songs as much as the songs themselves. Having encountered Irish music initially through dancing, she is glad to be on this side of the microphone for a change... although she's not above jumping out onto the dance floor for the occasional polka!
Julia Weems (vocals, guitar) also grew up singing, thanks to the influence of her musical family. With a church musician mother and a father who is a professor of music and vocal performance at Birmingham-Southern College, Julia didn't realize until adolescence that not everyone sang the blessing before dinner in four-part harmony. She has happily continued the family tradition by wedding musician Jamie Weems (mandolin). In between playing with Wooden Finger, Hired Man's Horse, The Scramblers, and The Horse Trailers, Jamie often joins St. Brigid's (lucky to be the only guy in an otherwise all-girl group), adding mandolin as well as his original compositions to the group's instrumentation.
Susan Wellman (vocals, pennywhistle, accordion) is the inspiration behind St. Brigid's, thanks to a lifelong love of three-part harmony and Irish and English folk songs. She has studied piano, viola and voice, and has sung in choral groups in North Carolina and in Mississippi. She was a longtime member of Jackson-based Celtic band Bounds Street.
